Technology Future

An arms-length Alberta government organization focused on promoting research, innovation and diversification in the province. Most provincial funding surrounding innovation flows through this organization.

What they do:

The TDA’s will provide advice and coaching to anyone and help guide you through the grant applications.

Funds available:

Advice and coaching can happen at any time, but the funding is only initiated to happen when you have some time and energy invested into an idea.  This may be a business plan or a prototype already in place. Your company does need to be incorporated and operating in Alberta.

  • Micro-voucher up to $10,000 (business plan, initial prototype)
  • Voucher $10,000 to $100,000 (proof of concept, validation, commercialization)
  • Product Demonstration up to $300,000 (partner with a customer to optimize product)

There are time limits, cash matching requirements etc.  Refer to the website or talk to the TDA.

Olds College Center for Innovation (OCCI)

Agricultural and Entrepreneurial College.  Connected to the Innovation network through Regional Innovation Networks.

What they do:

  • We will help or mentor entrepreneurs and SME’s and large industry.
  • We can test concepts/ products through the OCCI (Olds College Centre of Innovation) specializing in agriculture, livestock, turf and wetlands.
  • We have garment expertise through our partnership in the Apparel Innovation Centre.
  • Spirit of Entrepreneurship App is a gamified way to learn about business basics and is available to anyone in Central Alberta 3 Day start up.
  • We are also experts at navigating the innovation network in Alberta.
  • We act as a portal to other people in the province and Canada who can help you.
  • We will make a person to person introduction.

Red Deer College Applied Research and Innovation

The Applied Research and Innovation focuses on the areas of Innovation in Manufacturing, Environment and Ecology, Faculty and Student Research and Innovation, and Health Research.

A Comprehensive Community College.  Connected to the Innovation network through Regional Innovation Networks, the TDA and ITA have offices at RDC.

What they do:

  • Mentor entrepreneurs and SME’s and large industry.
  • Can build prototypes in the Centre for Innovation in manufacturing
  • Expertise in marketing, intellectual property and surveys.
  • Operate on a fee for service basis. Mentoring and coaching is free for a bit, but other services are charged on a cost recovery basis
  • We are experts at navigating the innovation network in Alberta.
  • We act as a portal to other people in the province and Canada who can help you.
  • We will make a person to person introduction

Funds available:

Funding opportunity:  you need to be incorporated, we can support you up to $5,000.  You need to match up this funding 50%

 

 

National Research Council – IRAP (Industrial Research Assistance Program)

A federal agency that promotes innovation in industry.

 

What they do:

The ITA’s will also provide advice and mentoring to entrepreneurs.

Funds available:

To access funding you need to be incorporated and show some sales. When your company requires a technical person (i.e. engineer, coder, technologist) they will help support that person’s salary.

This is a reimbursement program, so the company pays upfront and then you submit a report and receipts for reimbursement.

NSERC Engage:  new relationship with a college or university.  First level is $25,000 matching is $25,000 in-kind.  The business needs to be in operation for 2 years and have at least 2 employees.
