AI in Alberta: How Red Deer Polytechnic Students Are Driving Innovation

Discover how future professionals are embracing artificial intelligence to transform business and workforce practices.

A Conference That Sparked Change

On October 22, 2025, sixteen Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) students attended the AI for Business Conference – Tools, Tactics, Transformation at Olds College Alumni Centre. The Central Alberta Regional Innovation Network (CARIN) was proud to have sponsored this event, where we connected businesses and students with valuable AI resources to foster innovation.

This high-impact event brought together Alberta business owners, innovators, and economic leaders to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and creating new opportunities for growth.

The conference featured keynote speaker Evgeny Koloda, a Virtual CIO and Business Innovation Strategist with over 25 years of experience in digital transformation. His session, “Practical AI: From Buzzword to Bottom-Line Impact,” demonstrated how small and rural businesses can leverage AI to automate tasks, enhance productivity, and grow—without needing a full IT department.

Breakout sessions such as AI Tools for Efficiency and Productivity and HR Crisis to Capabilities provided hands-on strategies for applying AI ethically and effectively in real-world contexts.

Student Success Stories: Learning and Applying AI

Jiyad

What I learned: “I learned about the rapid transformation of AI and discovered several AI tools that can be used for creating customized songs, visual videos, and much more.”

How I’ll apply it: “I’ve started using Google Gemini, which was mentioned as one of the most trusted and safer AI platforms compared to others, offering better options and reliability. I plan to incorporate AI tools into my daily routine, especially for repetitive tasks, to improve efficiency.”

Top takeaway: “The conference motivated me to use AI wisely — as a supportive tool rather than a main dependency — and to stay aware of ethical and safe usage practices.”

What I learned: “At first, I was hesitant about AI because I thought it might take over human jobs. However, attending the AI for Business: Tools, Tactics & Transformation Conference completely changed my perspective. The session “Practical AI: From Buzzword to Bottom-Line Impact” by Evgeny Koloda was eye-opening, as it showed how AI can move from a simple idea to real results that improve business performance. I also joined AI Tools for Efficiency and Productivity and the breakout session “HR Crisis to Capabilities,” which showed how technology can make work smarter, faster, and more people-focused. I learned that when used ethically, AI supports better decision-making, boosts innovation, and reduces unconscious bias not only in HR but across many industries.”

How I’ll apply it: “As an HR student and emerging professional, I plan to use AI in recruitment, analytics, and workforce planning to support data-driven decisions.  In my RDP AP practicum, I’ll explore AI tools to improve productivity and data management.  I’m committed to learning how to use AI responsibly, balancing insights with empathy and ethics. Beyond HR, I see AI’s potential to improve business operations, customer experiences, and research efficiency. I will continue learning how to use AI responsibly by balancing data insights with empathy and ethical decision-making to make technology work for people, not the other way around.”

Top takeaway: “AI’s true strength comes from working together with people because it does not replace us; it empowers us. The conference reminded me that ethical leadership, curiosity, and continuous learning are key to using AI effectively. I was especially inspired by RDP panelists like Subhayan Guha Thakurta, whose passion and collaboration showed how our community can lead meaningful change. I left the event feeling inspired and motivated to apply what I have learned to both my practicum and future HR career.”

Why This Matters for Alberta’s Future

This initiative was part of a broader response to the 2025 BREWD (Business Retention & Expansion Workforce Development) survey, which identified opportunities for growth and innovation across Central Alberta. By equipping students and businesses with practical AI knowledge, the region is taking smart steps toward a more resilient and competitive economy.

Looking Ahead: Be Part of the Change

The AI for Business Conference was more than an event—it was a catalyst for innovation and ethical leadership. RDP students left inspired and ready to apply what they learned in their studies, practicums, and future careers.
